Senior MQM Pakistan leader Dr. Farooq Sattar has said that the Constitution is sacred but not divine scripture, so there should be no surprise or fear when constitutional amendments are proposed. Speaking to the media outside Parliament House, he explained that as times and national needs change, making amendments in the Constitution is a democratic and necessary process. His statement came during ongoing discussions about the 27th Constitutional Amendment and political developments in the country.

Farooq Sattar emphasized that empowering local governments can help solve public problems more effectively. He said that local government laws need to be improved further so that citizens can get relief at their doorstep. According to him, real governance begins at the local level, and strengthening municipalities is key to progress.

During an MQM parliamentary party meeting, members discussed the 27th Constitutional Amendment, the current political situation, the MQM–PML-N agreement, and the proposed local government constitutional package. Participants suggested that the government should be approached to support and pass the new local government amendments to ensure a stronger local system.

Farooq Sattar also said that after the 18th Amendment brought provincial autonomy, the next logical step should be to grant autonomy to local governments. He reminded that during the 26th Amendment, most political parties agreed on major reforms, and this same spirit of unity should continue to serve the people’s interests through future amendments.

Farooq Sattar reiterated that the Constitution is sacred but not divine scripture, and timely amendments should be viewed as part of Pakistan’s democratic growth, not as a threat to it.
