YouTube removes Palestinian rights groups’ accounts and videos
On Wednesday, The Intercept reported that YouTube permanently deleted videos from three major Palestinian human rights groups. The affected organizations are Al-Haq, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR). The move followed a campaign by the U.S. government to limit accountability for Israeli actions in Gaza and the West Bank. The deletions erased entire channels and their archives, removing years of documented content.
The videos removed included investigations into civilian killings, home demolitions, and the murder of Al-Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. Hundreds of videos documenting alleged Israeli war crimes were wiped from the platform. The deletions also included live coverage of Israeli soldiers targeting Palestinian civilians, including children. Documentary filmmaker Robert Inlakesh confirmed the removal of several videos and entire accounts on social media.
YouTube, owned by Google, stated it acted in compliance with U.S. sanctions and trade laws. Company spokesperson Boot Bullwinkle said the platform “enforces restrictions on entities under U.S. sanctions.” The action followed a review triggered by sanctions imposed during the Trump administration. These sanctions cited the organizations’ cooperation with the International Criminal Court (ICC) in war crimes investigations.
The ICC investigations target Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Security Minister Yoav Gallant. Human rights advocates criticized the deletions, calling them an attempt to erase evidence of Israeli abuses. They also argued the move silences Palestinian civil society and hinders accountability efforts online. Many activists said this sets a dangerous precedent for the removal of critical content on social media platforms.
The incident highlights the tension between global sanctions, digital platforms, and human rights advocacy. It raises questions about the role of tech companies in enforcing government policies. Observers warn that online censorship may limit access to crucial information about conflicts. Advocates urge international attention to protect human rights documentation from political suppression. The deletions have sparked widespread condemnation and concern among civil society groups worldwide.
