Millions of individuals who have underreported taxable income or failed to file tax returns are now under the radar of Pakistan’s Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). According to sources within the FBR, extensive groundwork is underway to launch a major crackdown on tax evaders across the country.

The FBR is currently compiling data on non-filers and individuals who have shown significantly lower taxable income than their actual earnings. This information is being shared with field formations, and with the approval of the FBR Chairman, notices will soon be issued to these tax defaulters.

The data collection focuses on individuals’ valuable assets such as property, vehicles, bank balances, and credit card usage. In addition, information regarding overseas travel, the use of expensive healthcare and educational services, and other indicators of wealth is being gathered to identify discrepancies in declared income.

This year, over 2 million individuals have reported zero taxable income in their tax returns, which has raised alarms within the tax authorities. In addition to going after the tax evaders themselves, FBR will also target those facilitating tax evasion.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has already directed the FBR to intensify actions against tax defaulters as part of a broader effort to enhance tax collection and ensure fairness in the taxation system.
