AI Actress Tilly Norwood Sparks Controversy at Zurich Film Festival

Artificial Intelligence and Hollywood clashed this weekend after the debut of Tilly Norwood, the world’s first AI actress, at the Zurich Film Festival. Created by actress and producer Eline Van der Velden, Tilly’s unveiling drew interest from talent agents and immediate backlash from actors. Many performers criticized the use of AI in film, fearing it could threaten human creativity and jobs in the industry.

In response to the criticism, Van der Velden defended her creation, calling Tilly Norwood a “piece of art” and not a replacement for real actors. She compared the AI character to animation or CGI, stating that such tools never eliminated live performances. Van der Velden, an actress herself, insisted that human acting remains irreplaceable and that AI can only serve as another creative tool.

Tilly Norwood is the first project from Xicoia, an AI talent studio launched by Van der Velden’s production company, Particle6. Early reactions were skeptical, but by May, agencies began showing interest. Norwood has already landed a role in an upcoming comedy called AI Commissioner, which explores how television may evolve with AI in entertainment. She is also gaining attention on social media platforms.

However, many actors have voiced strong opposition. Melissa Barrera urged actors to drop any agent who signs Norwood, while Kiersey Clemons called for naming the agencies involved. Mara Wilson criticized the use of real women’s faces in developing the AI, and others responded with sarcasm and memes. The concern remains high over AI’s growing presence in the industry.

Still, Van der Velden remains confident. She aims for Tilly Norwood to reach the fame of stars like Scarlett Johansson. Despite the negative reaction, she believes audiences will accept AI characters over time. Although AI Commissioner has no release date yet, it signals the beginning of Van der Velden’s vision to blend AI and storytelling in new ways.
