Flood Emergency in Karachi: Dam Bursts, Roads and Schools Shut

Gravatar Avatar Web Desk | 1 week ago

Continuous heavy rainfall in Karachi has led to the overflow of the Thado Dam, resulting in a powerful flood stream reaching the M9 Motorway. Large portions of the Super Highway, especially near the Al-Habib Restaurant, have been submerged, prompting a complete shutdown of traffic between Karachi and Hyderabad in both directions. The National Highways and Motorway Police confirmed that water levels have risen to the edge of the motorway, flooding major parts of the highway. In response, barriers in the median strip of M9 are being removed to redirect the water flow.

Floodwaters have entered several residential areas around the Super Highway, with water levels reaching up to 4 to 5 feet in some places. Karachi Commissioner, on the instructions of the Chief Minister of Sindh, has mobilized rescue and relief teams. Authorities are working on breaking through the motorway’s central divider to drain floodwaters and restore traffic. The overflowing Thado Dam has also sent floodwaters into Saadi Town, causing widespread panic as residents struggle to protect their belongings and vehicles.

Reports indicate that the strong water current has swept away rickshaws and vans, with floodwater entering multiple homes. Areas including Malir, Sohrab Goth, Machhar Colony, Khameeso Jokhio Goth, and parts of New Karachi have been severely affected. Rescue operations are underway using boats to evacuate people to safer locations. Rescue 1122 and Edhi Foundation teams are actively working on-site to drain water, assist residents, and clear roads for movement.

Rangers officers and personnel have joined forces with local authorities, Rescue 1122, and Edhi Foundation to support relief operations in affected areas like Malir, M9 Motorway, Sohrab Goth, Khameeso Goth, Lyari River, Malir River, and Machhar Colony. The Motorway Police, Traffic Police, and District Administration remain on high alert. Both tracks of the M9 Motorway near the Cantt and Motorway Police Office have been closed due to flood risks. Traffic from Hyderabad is being diverted via Model Road, while vehicles from Karachi are being redirected through Sabzi Mandi Cut. Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and use alternative routes as more flooding is expected in low-lying areas.
