Flotilla Workers Reveal Mistreatment in Israeli Custody

After returning home, aid workers from the Gaza-bound flotilla shared shocking stories of mistreatment in Israeli custody. So far, Israel has deported 170 out of more than 450 detained activists. The flotilla was carrying aid to Gaza when it was stopped by Israeli forces.

Many workers who returned to Italy said they were harassed by Israeli soldiers and police. They were denied access to medicine and kept in very poor conditions. One person said he was tied up for six hours in a freezing room.

An Italian activist, Cesare Tofani, said, “We were treated very badly. First, we were harassed by soldiers, then by the police.” Another official said guns were pointed at them and they were treated violently.

Italian journalist Saverio Tommasi said the detainees were mocked during custody. He added that some of the activists included famous people like climate activist Greta Thunberg and Mandela Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela.

Another journalist, Lorenzo De Agostini, revealed that Israeli officials took his belongings and money. These stories show the serious mistreatment in Israeli custody, raising international concern over how peaceful activists are being treated.
