New Delhi, India – Mourners gathered in New Delhi on Saturday to pay their final respects to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a visionary leader who played a pivotal role in shaping India’s modern economy. Singh, who served as prime minister from 2004 to 2014, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92, prompting seven days of state mourning.

Singh’s body, adorned with floral garlands and flanked by a guard of honour, was brought to the Congress Party headquarters in the capital. His state funeral, with full honours, will include a procession through the city before his cremation.

Current Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Singh as “one of India’s most distinguished leaders,” while opposition leader Rahul Gandhi called him “a mentor and guide,” acknowledging his wisdom and integrity in steering the nation. U.S. President Joe Biden also paid tribute, hailing Singh as a “true statesman” who made contributions that would resonate for generations.

Born in 1932 in the village of Gah, now in Pakistan, Singh rose from humble beginnings to become a globally respected economist and leader. Educated at Cambridge and Oxford, Singh obtained a doctorate in economics and held key roles in India’s civil service, including serving as central bank governor and working with the United Nations.

In 1991, during one of India’s worst financial crises, Singh was appointed finance minister by then-Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao. He introduced groundbreaking economic reforms that liberalised India’s economy, setting the foundation for sustained growth.

As prime minister, Singh’s first term saw rapid economic expansion, with growth rates of up to 9%. He also spearheaded a landmark nuclear agreement with the United States, enhancing India’s global standing.

Singh’s second term, however, was marred by corruption scandals, high inflation, and slowing growth, which dented his popularity and contributed to the rise of Narendra Modi’s leadership in 2014.

Despite the challenges, Singh remained an emblem of humility and dedication. President Droupadi Murmu lauded him for his “unblemished political life and utmost humility,” underscoring his commitment to India’s development.

Manmohan Singh’s legacy as a reformer and leader will endure, marking him as a transformative figure in India’s history. His contributions to the nation’s economic progress and international stature testify to his vision and service.
