France Honors Jamal Shah for Contributions to Arts

ISLAMABAD: France has awarded Syed Jamal Shah the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contribution to Pakistani arts. The ceremony took place at the French ambassador’s residence, attended by diplomats, artists, and cultural leaders. This prestigious honour celebrates individuals who enrich global arts and literature. Shah’s lifelong dedication to sculpture, painting, acting, and education earned him this recognition. His work continues to inspire artists and promote cultural understanding.
French Ambassador Nicolas Galey highlighted Shah’s roots in Quetta, near the archaeological site of Mehrgarh. He noted how Shah’s surroundings shaped his creativity. Galey praised Shah’s deep connection to Pakistan’s cultural heritage and artistic traditions. He also acknowledged Shah’s efforts to strengthen Pakistan-France ties through art. The ambassador shared that Shah’s artistic vision reflects shared values of resilience, healing, and cultural pride.
Jamal Shah founded Hunerkada College of Visual and Performing Arts and mentored young artists for over 15 years. His leadership helped many find healing and expression through art. Shah also served as Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture in 2023. In this role, he promoted crafts, tourism, archaeology, and folk traditions. His past role as Director General of PNCA saw the launch of major cultural festivals and exhibitions.
Currently, Shah leads the Silk Road Culture Centre, promoting international dialogue and exchange through the arts. His continued efforts support cross-border collaboration and peacebuilding through creativity. France recognized his impact in strengthening global cultural ties. Shah’s belief in the power of art aligns with the spirit of the award.
The insignia, presented on behalf of the French Minister of Culture, affirms Shah’s influence in shaping Pakistan’s cultural identity. It also highlights his contribution to international arts cooperation. The award cements Shah’s place among celebrated artists globally. France’s gesture celebrates not just an individual, but a bridge between two cultures.
