A historic ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas has been agreed following 486 days of fierce fighting. Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani of Qatar announced the agreement, which will take effect on Sunday, January 19. An important turning point in the region’s long history of conflict is marked by the agreement.

A total of 2,000 Palestinian and 33 Israeli inmates will be freed under the six-week ceasefire. Three phases will comprise the ceasefire. In exchange for each Israeli hostage, Israel will release 30 Palestinian inmates during the first phase of the 42-day truce, while Hamas will release 33 Israeli hostages. There will also be the release of 50 Palestinian detainees in exchange for female hostages.

Additional negotiations to free more prisoners and prolong the terms of the accord will take place during the second phase, which will start on day 16 of the truce. All hostages will be released in the last stage, and Israel is anticipated to leave Gaza entirely.

Both Gaza and Tel Aviv have celebrated the news, which represents a glimmer of hope for those who have suffered through more than 15 months of bloodshed and adversity. As the word of the truce spread, Palestinians flocked to the streets to thank God and offer prayers.
