Government Approves Promotion of Army Chief General Asim Munir to Field Marshal Rank

In a significant development, the federal government has approved the promotion of Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal, a move considered rare in Pakistan’s military history.
According to official sources, the decision was finalised during a high-level meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, where senior civil and military leaders endorsed the promotion. The elevation to Field Marshal – the highest possible rank in the Pakistan Army – is largely ceremonial but carries great symbolic and strategic weight.
General Asim Munir, who assumed charge as Army Chief in November 2022, has played a prominent role in shaping national security policies and leading counter-terrorism operations during his tenure. His leadership in regional diplomacy and defence modernisation has been widely recognised by both domestic and international observers.
Field Marshal is a five-star rank and has only been held once before in the country’s history, by the late General Ayub Khan in 1959. The conferment of this title on General Munir marks a historic moment, underscoring his distinguished service and contributions to national defence.
