Islamabad: The government and the sugar industry have reached an agreement to fix the ex-mill price of sugar at Rs165 per kilogram.
According to the Ministry of National Food Security, provincial governments will ensure the availability of sugar to the public at the agreed price. Despite the agreement, sugar prices in various cities—particularly Karachi and Peshawar—have surged to as high as Rs200 per kilogram, adding to inflationary pressure.
To stabilise prices, the government has approved the import of 500,000 tons of sugar. However, former caretaker minister and PML-N ally Fawad Hasan Fawad has criticised the decision, calling for a review of the import plan.
