Government to Import 500,000 Tons of Sugar to Control Prices

In a major step to address rising sugar prices and ensure a consistent supply in local markets, the federal government has decided to import 500,000 metric tons of sugar.

The move was finalised during a high-level meeting focused on tackling sugar availability and pricing challenges, according to official sources.

Authorities have pledged to take strict action against hoarders and profiteers, aiming to prevent artificial inflation and safeguard consumer interests. Law enforcement agencies and regulatory bodies have been directed to closely monitor market activities.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reportedly approved a nationwide crackdown on elements responsible for creating shortages or manipulating sugar prices. The campaign will target those involved in stockpiling, speculative trading, or unauthorised price increases.

To ensure effective enforcement, key institutions, including the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), the Intelligence Bureau (IB), the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), and the State Bank of Pakistan, have been given full operational authority. These agencies will work in coordination to monitor financial transactions, trace illegal storage, and ensure transparent supply chains.
