Experts highlight Gwadar’s growing strategic importance for regional trade

Former National Security Adviser Nasser Khan Janjua has emphasized the strategic and economic importance of Balochistan and Gwadar, stating that future regional and global trade routes are expected to shift toward Pakistan.
Speaking at a ceremony organized by the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Lahore, Janjua said Pakistan has historically been viewed as a buffer zone, while long-standing tensions with Afghanistan have also affected its regional position. He added that India has limited access to Central Asia without passing through Pakistan, which enhances the country’s long-term geostrategic importance.
He further stated that emerging trade dynamics indicate a shift in global and regional commerce routes toward Pakistan, making the country a key transit hub in the future.
LCCI President Fahim-ur-Rehman Saigol also highlighted the rising significance of Gwadar Port, noting its potential to play a central role in Pakistan’s economic development. He said that Gwadar and Balochistan have the capability to connect Pakistan with the Middle East, Central Asia, China, and Europe, potentially transforming both the national and regional economies.
According to him, future trade and energy corridors are likely to pass through Pakistan, further increasing its strategic relevance in global supply chains.
During the event, a memorandum of understanding was also signed between the Lahore Chamber and Gwadar Gymkhana to promote institutional cooperation and economic linkages.
Participants described Gwadar as a key driver of future economic growth, particularly under broader regional connectivity initiatives. Experts believe that sustained investment in infrastructure and trade facilitation could strengthen Pakistan’s role as a regional trade gateway.
