Indian Parliament Bans Online Money Games

The Indian Parliament has passed a bill banning online games played with money.
The decision directly threatens the future of the popular fantasy gaming sector. Lawmakers said the ban was necessary to protect citizens from harmful financial and mental impacts. The bill also blocks promotion and financial transactions linked to these games.
The move has shocked investors and companies in the industry. The fantasy gaming sector was expected to be worth $3.6 billion by 2029. Venture capital firms like Tiger Global and Peak XV Partners had heavily supported startups in this field. Experts believe the sudden restrictions will shake investor confidence and slow sector growth.
Industry representatives warned of immediate job losses across the country. Many app-based businesses could face complete shutdown. These companies had raised billions of dollars from foreign investors in recent years. Analysts stressed that the ban could reverse years of progress in India’s tech-driven gaming economy.
The government defended its decision, saying such games can cause financial harm and mental stress. Officials argued that strict regulation was no longer enough. Instead, a complete ban was required to safeguard public welfare. The measure also seeks to prevent young players from falling into addiction and financial losses.
