Iran attacks Qatar gas hub

DOHA – Iranian attacks caused “extensive damage” at the Ras Laffan gas hub, QatarEnergy said Thursday. A fire lit the night sky, visible from 30km away. Emergency teams were deployed immediately to contain the blaze. Authorities confirmed no casualties.

The attacks came after a US-Israeli strike on Iranian facilities, which Tehran said would trigger retaliation across the Gulf. Iranian missiles and drones targeted Gulf energy infrastructure. The assaults angered hydrocarbon-rich monarchies in the region.

Qatar’s foreign ministry condemned the strikes as a “brutal Iranian attack” and a direct threat to national security. Tehran’s military and diplomatic staff were ordered to leave Qatar within 24 hours. Doha emphasized its energy facilities must be protected.

Qatar’s defence ministry said air defences intercepted two ballistic missiles targeting Ras Laffan. Civil defence reported the fire was under control. No casualties were reported from the interception. The facility’s operations are being assessed.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warned of further attacks “until [targets] are completely destroyed.” President Masoud Pezeshkian called the strikes on energy infrastructure potentially having “uncontrollable consequences.” The warning signals escalating regional tension.

Saudi Arabia also faced attacks, with four people injured in Riyadh from falling missile debris. Four ballistic missiles and multiple drones were intercepted. Several strikes targeted gas facilities in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. Civil defence confirmed damage but limited casualties.

Gulf states had condemned the attacks on Iranian facilities. UAE called them a “dangerous escalation,” and Qatar warned of threats to global energy security. Past attacks targeted Saudi and UAE refineries, and QatarEnergy halted LNG production, declaring force majeure. Regional energy producers remain on high alert.
