Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Tuesday that Israel is offering a $5 million reward to anyone who helps secure the release of hostages held in Gaza. The announcement came during a visit to the Netzarim Corridor, a key military supply route south of Gaza City, where Netanyahu addressed the press in a video released by his office.

Wearing a helmet and bulletproof jacket, Netanyahu stood against the backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea, emphasising Israel’s commitment to rescuing hostages. “Anybody who brings out a hostage will find with us a secure way for them and their family to leave,” he declared. “We will also give them a reward of $5 million for each hostage.”

The unprecedented offer comes amid ongoing military operations in Gaza following the October 7 attacks by Hamas militants, during which numerous hostages were taken. Israel’s military has since been engaged in heavy fighting across Gaza, aiming to dismantle Hamas infrastructure and rescue those captured.

The reward is seen as an attempt to incentivise cooperation from Gaza residents or others who may have access to the hostages’ locations. Netanyahu’s message underscores Israel’s efforts to combine military strategy with direct appeals for assistance from within the Palestinian territory.

The situation in Gaza remains dire, with widespread destruction, a humanitarian crisis, and intense clashes between Israeli forces and Hamas fighters. As the conflict continues, Netanyahu’s announcement highlights the lengths Israel is willing to go to ensure the safe return of its citizens.
