Israel to Release All Spanish Activists from Flotilla

Israel will release the remaining 28 Spanish nationals detained after joining a flotilla carrying aid and activists to Gaza. Spain’s Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Albares, confirmed the release on Monday during a radio interview. He said the detainees would leave Israel the same day. Earlier, 21 Spanish activists had already returned home over the weekend. The minister avoided sharing further details for privacy reasons but said efforts were underway for their quick return.

The detainees were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which aimed to break Israel’s blockade and deliver aid to Gaza. The United Nations has warned of famine in Gaza, blaming Israel for blocking humanitarian deliveries. The flotilla was intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters last Wednesday. Israel claimed the vessels carried over 400 people and were not allowed to reach Palestinian territory. Activists on board included several nationalities, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.

Foreign governments have confirmed that most detainees will be flown to Greece before returning to their home countries. Spain expects that no citizens will remain in Israeli custody by the end of Monday. Albares emphasized that the Spanish government had worked hard for their release. He said their safe and swift return was the top priority. Other countries, including Sweden, have also coordinated closely with Israeli authorities.

The flotilla incident has drawn international attention and renewed criticism of Israel’s blockade on Gaza. Humanitarian groups argue that restricting aid violates international law. Israel maintains that the blockade is necessary for security reasons. However, the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to fuel global concern. The UN has called for immediate and unhindered access to food, water, and medical supplies.

This latest incident highlights rising global pressure on Israel amid the Gaza conflict. While Israel insists on its right to self-defense, international outrage over the humanitarian situation is mounting. Activist missions like the Global Sumud Flotilla aim to challenge the blockade and raise awareness. As more detainees are released, the focus now shifts to ensuring aid can actually reach those in need.
