Karachi Building Collapse: 6 Dead, Dozens Feared Trapped in Lyari Tragedy

Krachi: Lyari Building Collapse, 6 Dead, 25 Feared Trapped in Karachi Tragedy
A five-storey residential building collapsed in the densely populated Baghdadi area of Lyari, claiming at least six lives and injuring six others, according to local rescue authorities. Emergency services are continuing a desperate search for survivors as 20 to 25 people are feared trapped beneath the rubble.
Rescue Efforts Underway Amid Narrow Streets and Heavy Debris
The incident occurred near 8 Chowk, close to a 24-hour clinic, where the old structure suddenly gave way. Due to Lyari’s narrow alleyways, the rescue operation has been challenging, with heavy machinery struggling to access the site. Rescue 1122, Edhi, and Chhipa teams are working around the clock alongside volunteers to pull people from the debris.
Officials from Karachi’s administration confirmed that among the injured, one person is in critical condition, while others sustained minor wounds. They were transferred to the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Trauma Centre for immediate treatment.
Officials Confirm Multiple Fatalities, Launch Full-Scale Investigation
Deputy Mayor of Karachi, Salman Abdullah Murad, reported that an estimated 25 individuals may still be buried under the collapsed structure. “The situation is tragic. We are using all available resources to recover the victims as quickly as possible,” he stated.
In response, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has ordered an immediate investigation and demanded a comprehensive list of all dilapidated buildings across Karachi. He emphasised, “This heartbreaking event should never repeat. We will take strict action to ensure citizen safety.”
Local Community, Volunteers Step Up
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and sorrow as families searched for loved ones. Many locals joined the rescue, using their bare hands to clear debris. Survivors reported hearing cries for help from within the collapsed building.
The fallen structure housed over 12 flats and several ground-floor shops, many of which were open at the time of the collapse.
