Lahore’s air quality index (AQI) reading remained extremely high at 396 on Saturday, ranking the city second in the world for air pollution. The situation in Punjab continues to be hazardous, with several cities experiencing alarming pollution levels.
Faisalabad topped the list of the most polluted cities in Pakistan with an AQI reading of 571, while Gujranwala followed closely with a level of 570. Lahore’s air quality remained at 396, and Multan’s AQI recorded 257. These readings indicate that the air quality in most parts of the province is extremely unhealthy.
Last year, Punjab experienced severe air pollution and smog during the winter months, leading to widespread health concerns. Authorities struggled to control the situation, as pollution levels soared to dangerously high levels. The smog, a combination of fog and pollutants, was worsened by diesel fumes and smoke from seasonal crop burning.
At its peak, Lahore’s pollution level reached more than 80 times the limit set by the World Health Organization (WHO) for safe air. To protect the public from the harmful effects, the government had to close schools and impose restrictions on businesses and public spaces.
Despite these efforts, the pollution problem remains a recurring issue in Punjab, especially with the onset of winter. Authorities continue to battle severe air quality concerns, which have become a major health crisis in the region.
