Slams Punjab Government Over Smog

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered a complete ban on commercial activities every Sunday as part of efforts to reduce smog and environmental pollution. The court issued the order while hearing a case related to air quality and pollution in the city on Tuesday. The bench emphasized the need for strict enforcement to tackle the growing pollution crisis.

The court also directed that wedding halls be closed by 10 PM, a move aimed at controlling pollution caused by late-night commercial activities. The Deputy Commissioner of Lahore, Musa Raza, appeared in court and submitted a notification regarding the closure of markets and restaurants at 10 PM. However, the bench insisted that issuing notifications alone was not enough, stressing the importance of strict enforcement.

Justice Shahid Karim, who has been presiding over the case, clarified that the court’s actions were intended to address the escalating pollution levels in Lahore. He pointed out that smog in the city had reached critical levels, and immediate measures were necessary. The bench also received updates from Wasa’s lawyer, Mian Irfan Akram, about the ongoing sewerage system improvements.

The court instructed Wasa to submit a detailed report on its projects and timelines. Additionally, the bench mandated that a director-level officer from the Environment Department be present at every future hearing. This measure is intended to ensure accountability and progress in addressing the pollution problem.

On Monday, the LHC expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s efforts to combat smog and air pollution. The court criticized the non-compliance with the restaurant closure order and highlighted that transport accounted for 70% of Lahore’s pollution. Justice Karim emphasized that instead of blaming others, it was essential for the city to address its own pollution issues. The court adjourned the hearing until November 7.
