Libyan Red Crescent rescues migrants, recovers 17 bodies at sea

The Libyan Red Crescent has reported a tragic maritime incident in which a patrol boat recovered 17 bodies and rescued seven survivors during an operation off the coast of Libya. The mission involved assisting a stranded vessel carrying migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea.
According to the organisation, the rescue operation was carried out after eight days of distress at sea. The Almarqab patrol boat, attached to a naval base, located the vessel and conducted a difficult evacuation under challenging conditions. Officials described the mission as one of the most arduous field operations to date.
Libya remains a major transit point for migrants attempting to reach Europe, particularly Italy, which lies about 300 kilometres away. Thousands of people each year risk dangerous sea journeys in search of safety and better economic opportunities. Many of these journeys are organised through smuggling networks operating along the North African coast.

The Red Crescent shared images on social media showing rescue workers recovering bodies from the vessel and providing aid to survivors. While the nationalities of those on board were not immediately confirmed, the organisation stated that humanitarian assistance was provided in coordination with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, indicating the passengers were likely migrants.
The operation involved multiple agencies, including the coastguard, navy personnel, and coastal security units. The rescue effort lasted more than eight hours and was carried out under difficult sea conditions.
Authorities have not released further details regarding the cause of the vessel’s distress or the circumstances leading to the deaths. Investigations are expected to continue as humanitarian organisations raise concerns over the ongoing migrant crisis in the Mediterranean region.
