Islamabad: Torrential monsoon rains and flash floods have claimed 54 lives and injured 227 people across Pakistan in the past 24 hours, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

Since June 26, a total of 178 fatalities have been reported, including 85 children, with 491 people injured. Most casualties were caused by house collapses, electrocution, and floodwaters.

In Rawalpindi and Islamabad, continuous overnight rain has dangerously raised the water level in Nullah Lai, prompting authorities to advise nearby residents to evacuate. Over 250 mm of rain has submerged several low-lying areas.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has imposed Section 144, banning swimming in rivers, dams, ponds, and lakes, as well as boating without permission and bathing in rainwater pools. These restrictions will remain in effect until August 30.
