Nation Honours Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed on His 67th Martyrdom Anniversary

Pakistan is observing the 67th martyrdom anniversary of Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed today, Friday. He was the second soldier to receive Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan’s highest military award.
The country remembers his bravery and supreme sacrifice with pride and gratitude. Military leadership and citizens alike paid heartfelt tributes to the national hero.
Major Tufail Muhammad was born in 1914 in Hoshiarpur, which is now in Indian Punjab. He received his army commission in 1943 and joined the Punjab Regiment.
After the partition of British India in 1947, he opted to serve Pakistan. He was posted to the 1/16 Punjab Regiment, later known as 13 Punjab. He held several important instructional and command roles throughout his distinguished career.
In 1958, Major Tufail Muhammad was serving in East Pakistan. He was posted as a company commander in a border militia unit of East Pakistan Rifles. During his service, Indian troops crossed into Pakistani territory and captured a village in the Pathoria Forest near Lakshmipur. This was seen as a major violation of Pakistan’s border.
In response to the intrusion, Major Tufail was tasked with leading an attack against the occupying Indian forces. Despite strong resistance from the enemy, he carried out his mission with courage. He led from the front and fought with exceptional bravery. Sadly, he was martyred during this daring operation.
For his valour and heroism, Major Tufail Muhammad was posthumously awarded the Nishan-e-Haider. His actions continue to inspire generations of Pakistani soldiers. He remains a symbol of national pride and selfless service. His bravery on the battlefield is remembered as one of the finest examples in the Pakistan Army’s history.
On this solemn occasion, Pakistan’s Armed Forces and military leadership offered deep tributes. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and the Services Chiefs honoured Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed. Their statements praised his unmatched sacrifice and reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to defending its sovereignty.
