OpenAI has launched a major update to the ChatGPT mobile app, improving Voice Mode functionality. Users can now access Voice Mode directly within the main chat window, eliminating the need to switch to a separate interface. Previously, tapping the waveform icon would take users to a dedicated Voice Mode screen, where ChatGPT would listen to prompts and speak replies outside the main chat. This new update streamlines the process, making the experience smoother and more efficient.
The update, now available on both Android and iOS, keeps everything inside the current chat window. When users tap the waveform icon, they can see a live transcript of ChatGPT’s spoken response without leaving the conversation. This feature allows for easier navigation through earlier messages, maintaining context as the conversation progresses. Users can now seamlessly scroll up to review past responses while continuing to interact with ChatGPT.
In addition to voice responses, the new update supports visuals such as images, maps, and web pages. These can now appear directly alongside voice replies, enhancing the overall experience. OpenAI says the integration of text and voice in one thread provides more clarity, allowing users to distinguish between spoken and typed inputs. Spoken messages are now displayed in quotes, while typed responses remain unquoted, making it easy to follow the flow of conversation.
The update also offers greater flexibility. Users can type messages at any point, and ChatGPT will respond using voice, even if the user switches between text and voice. Ending voice output is simple: users can tap the “End” button to stop the voice responses. This functionality makes the interface more interactive and adaptable to user preferences.
For those who prefer the older interface, OpenAI has included an option to revert to the previous setup. Users can go to Settings > Voice Mode > Separate Mode to switch back. While the update is available on the mobile app, OpenAI has not confirmed when this feature will reach the desktop version or web interface.
