Pakistan and Indonesia have committed to further strengthening their bilateral ties, with a particular emphasis on enhancing economic and commercial relations. This agreement was reached during a meeting between Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on the sidelines of the D-8 Summit in Cairo.

The two leaders engaged in extensive discussions covering a wide range of issues of mutual interest, including political relations, trade, economic matters, and cooperation at multilateral platforms. Prime Minister Sharif expressed Pakistan’s appreciation for Indonesia’s support in securing sectoral partner status in ASEAN and its membership in the ASEAN Regional Forum. He also highlighted Pakistan’s aspiration to become a full dialogue partner of ASEAN, seeking Indonesia’s continued support in this endeavour.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Sharif acknowledged Indonesia as a reliable trade partner, especially in the supply of palm oil, which is crucial for Pakistan’s vegetable oil needs. Indonesia’s role as a key supplier was underscored as an essential component of Pakistan’s import requirements.

Both leaders also reiterated their strong support for the Palestinian cause, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and advocating for a comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue. They emphasised the need for the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, based on pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.

In addition, Prime Minister Sharif extended a warm invitation to President Subianto to visit Pakistan at his earliest convenience. The Indonesian president accepted the invitation, further solidifying the friendship between the two nations.
