Maritime Trade Corridor

KARACHI – Iraq has suggested launching a direct maritime route between Basra and Karachi in an effort to strengthen trade relations and enhance regional logistics.

The proposal was made by Iraq’s Consul General in Karachi, Maher Mjhid Jejan, during a visit to the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). He emphasised the potential for improved connectivity and mutual economic growth through closer maritime links.

In addition to trade, both countries are also exploring cooperation in areas such as defence, intelligence sharing, and counterterrorism efforts.

Highlighting Iraq’s recent economic reforms, Jejan invited Pakistani investors to explore new opportunities made available through revised investment laws and an improving business climate.

Officials at KCCI welcomed the initiative and expressed support for deeper economic engagement. They also discussed the possibility of establishing an oil pipeline connecting Basra with Pakistan’s port city of Gwadar, which could further boost bilateral energy cooperation.
