Pakistan begins construction of the largest nuclear power plant with Chinese collaboration

Pakistan has officially commenced the construction of its largest nuclear power plant, the Chashma Nuclear Power Project Unit-5 (C-5), marking a significant milestone in the country’s energy development. The project, set to boost Pakistan’s energy capacity by 1,200 MW, was launched today, December 30, with a ceremony attended by high-ranking officials from both Pakistan and China.
The formal start of construction was marked by the pouring of concrete into the foundation slab of the C-5 plant, an event witnessed by key officials from both nations. This move follows the approval of a construction license for the plant, granted by the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) earlier this year.
The C-5 power plant will be developed with Chinese assistance, continuing the long-standing collaboration between Pakistan and China in the nuclear energy sector. In April 2023, the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) applied for the license, submitting crucial documentation including a preliminary safety assessment report.
A Leap Forward in Pakistan’s Nuclear Energy Capacity
Once completed, the C-5 plant will have a generation capacity of 1,200 MW, significantly enhancing Pakistan’s overall energy production. Currently, Pakistan operates six nuclear power plants, with a combined capacity of 3,530 MW. The addition of C-5 will bring the total nuclear power generation capacity to over 4,700 MW, further diversifying the country’s energy mix.
The Chashma Nuclear Power Generating Station (CNPGS), located in Punjab, is already home to four operational nuclear power plants: C-1 and C-2 (325 MW each) and C-3 and C-4 (340 MW each). With the C-5 unit, the CNPGS will cement its role as a central hub for nuclear energy production in the country.
Strengthening Pakistan-China Energy Ties
The development of the C-5 plant underscores the ongoing cooperation between Pakistan and China, particularly in the field of nuclear energy. China has been a long-time partner in the expansion of Pakistan’s nuclear energy capabilities, providing expertise, technology, and financial support for multiple projects. The successful launch of the C-5 project further strengthens this strategic partnership and aligns with both countries’ efforts to enhance energy security.
Looking Ahead
The groundbreaking ceremony for the C-5 plant took place earlier in July 2023, with today’s concrete pouring marking the official commencement of construction. The completion of the plant is expected to significantly alleviate Pakistan’s growing energy demands, reducing the nation’s reliance on fossil fuels and contributing to cleaner energy sources.
As the project moves forward, the C-5 nuclear power plant is poised to play a crucial role in addressing Pakistan’s energy shortages and providing a stable, long-term solution for its energy needs. With the support of China and the expertise of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, the C-5 project marks a key step in Pakistan’s nuclear energy future.
