Pakistan and Sri Lanka will face off today in Abu Dhabi in a must-win Super Four match of the Asia Cup 2025. Both teams are coming off painful losses, with Pakistan suffering a heavy defeat to India, and Sri Lanka losing to Bangladesh. Another defeat for either side will almost end their hopes of reaching the final. While a slim mathematical chance may remain, only victory can realistically keep their campaigns alive.

Pakistan’s confidence took a major hit after their collapse against India. Their batting order failed to fire, and questions about their team selection increased. In response, Pakistan may bring back middle-order batter Hassan Nawaz to strengthen their lineup. On the other side, Sri Lanka could include spinner Maheesh Theekshana to exploit Pakistan’s weakness against spin. Both teams are under pressure, not just to win, but to restore pride and belief.

Historically, Pakistan have a slight edge over Sri Lanka, winning 13 of their past T20I encounters compared to Sri Lanka’s 10. However, Sri Lanka have dominated recent meetings, winning their last five T20Is against Pakistan since October 2019. This makes today’s match even more crucial, as momentum and recent form both favor Sri Lanka. But Pakistan will be desperate to turn the tide.

All eyes will be on the openers, with Pathum Nissanka and Sahibzada Farhan ranking second and third in tournament runs, respectively. Kusal Mendis also remains in strong form, sitting fifth among the top scorers. For Sri Lanka, Wanindu Hasaranga is the main threat, having taken 14 wickets in five games against Pakistan at a stunning average. His dominance against Pakistan’s batters could decide the match.

Pakistan’s bowlers must deliver early. Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf need to strike with the new ball to contain Sri Lanka. Although spinner Abrar Ahmed offers support, Pakistan must avoid over-relying on spin. Their biggest challenge lies in fixing their unstable batting order. Without clear roles and aggressive intent, Pakistan risk another collapse—and an early exit from the tournament.
