Pakistan urges OIC states to expand vaccine manufacturing industry

Pakistan on Tuesday called on Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states to strengthen collaboration in vaccine manufacturing. State Minister for Health Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad Malik highlighted the need for a self-reliant and resilient vaccine ecosystem. He stressed that vaccines are essential public goods and central to health security, equity, and sustainable development. The meeting took place in Islamabad at the OIC’s Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) Secretariat.
Dr. Malik said Pakistan and many OIC countries rely heavily on imported vaccines, spending about $400 million annually on immunization campaigns. International partners cover nearly 49 percent of these costs, leaving countries dependent on external support. Officials noted that global vaccine manufacturing remains highly concentrated, with more than 70 percent of vaccines produced in fewer than ten countries. This concentration creates vulnerabilities for low- and middle-income nations, particularly in the OIC region.
The health minister highlighted persistent challenges, including limited antigen production, technology access, regulatory maturity, and supply chain resilience. He emphasized that these weaknesses leave OIC countries exposed during health emergencies. Malik said that building capacity in vaccine production is essential for regional health security. He also noted the importance of coordinated efforts, knowledge sharing, and equitable access to life-saving vaccines.

Dr. Malik called for an implementation-focused roadmap with clear timelines and shared responsibility among OIC member states. He urged countries to work together to develop a resilient and future-ready vaccine manufacturing ecosystem. He emphasized that collaboration will reduce reliance on external suppliers and improve preparedness for pandemics and other health crises.
The OIC meeting brought together vaccine manufacturers and health officials to discuss strategies for strengthening production capacity. Participants agreed that regional cooperation is critical for achieving self-sufficiency in vaccines. Pakistan’s call reflects growing global attention on equitable vaccine access and the importance of sustainable manufacturing within OIC nations.
