Pakistani Architecture Project Wins Global Recognition

The Aga Khan Award for Architecture honored seven global projects for creative and impactful solutions to today’s major challenges. The ceremony took place at the Kyrgyz National Philharmonic Hall in Bishkek. His Highness the Aga Khan and Kyrgyz leader Adylbek Kasymaliev presided over the event. The winners addressed climate resilience, cultural heritage, and affordable housing. A $1 million prize was shared among the winning projects.
One of the winning projects was Vision Pakistan in Islamabad, designed by DB Studios. The facility combines bold design with meaningful social purpose. It houses a charity that empowers underprivileged youth through skills training. The Jury praised its joyful facade and economic efficiency. They noted its bright, functional spaces that inspire creativity and learning. The building reflects local craft traditions while addressing urgent community needs.
The winning designs highlight architecture’s role in solving real-world problems. Projects included flood-resistant bamboo homes and heritage restoration efforts. Another transformed oil ruins into a vibrant public space. These works show how thoughtful design can protect vulnerable communities. They also prove that architecture can promote sustainability and justice. Experts praised the creativity and purpose behind each selection.
His Highness the Aga Khan stressed the role of architecture in today’s climate and social challenges. He said buildings must protect people from climate risks. He also emphasized the importance of accessible housing and green spaces. Architecture, he said, can improve health, education, and cultural dignity. The award reflects this broader vision of design as a tool for human development. Each project aligns with these long-term goals.
Established in 1977, the Aga Khan Award remains one of the world’s most respected architecture prizes. It honors not just architects but also clients, engineers, and builders. Since its launch, it has recognized over 130 impactful projects globally. This year’s event also featured a commemorative stamp issued by Kyrgyzstan. The award continues to shape architectural thought across the Muslim world and beyond.
