PIA Offers New Deal to Retired Employees Amid Privatization

KARACHI, The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Holding Company has presented a new offer to retired employees as discussions continue over pension and medical benefits in the lead-up to the airline’s privatization.

A key meeting took place in Islamabad with representatives from the PIA Holding Company, Privatization Commission, State Life Insurance, and retired employees. The focus was to resolve issues related to post-privatization benefits.

While the parties discussed pension plans, the biggest point of contention remains the medical facilities. The Holding Company suggested outsourcing medical coverage to State Life Insurance, but the retired employees’ representatives requested a formal written proposal before agreeing to any changes.

Due to the unresolved dispute over medical benefits, the privatization bidding process has been postponed from October 30 to November 17.

Officials also agreed to revisit pension matters in a future meeting after the Holding Company seeks more time to prepare a revised plan.

Meanwhile, major PIA unions, including People’s Unity, Air League, and SASA, raised concerns about being excluded from the discussions. Shamim Akmal, President of the Air League, criticized the involvement of non-representative groups and warned that any modifications to retirees’ medical benefits without proper consultation could harm their rights.

The privatization process remains under close watch as stakeholders continue negotiations to safeguard employees’ welfare.
