Plastic Bag Manufacturers Challenge Ban in Sindh High Court

KARACHI: Plastic shopping bag manufacturers have challenged the Sindh government’s province-wide plastic bag ban in the Sindh High Court (SHC).
The petitioners’ counsel argued that the stakeholders were not consulted prior to the sudden ban, making it impossible to fulfil existing consignments. They added that the decision has impacted thousands of workers and businesses associated with the industry.
Appearing in court, SEPA Director Imran Sabir emphasised that the ban aligns with international environmental standards. “Regional countries like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have also banned plastic bags,” he added.
The court was informed that the ban, implemented from June 15, 2025, applies only to two out of eight categories of plastic bags—specifically non-degradable, oxo-degradable, black, and recycled plastic. Only eco-friendly alternatives are now permitted.
The High Court bench questioned the manufacturers regarding tax records and adjourned the hearing until July 23.
