Portugal to Declare Palestinian State Recognition on Sunday

Portugal will officially recognise the State of Palestine on Sunday, its foreign ministry confirmed in a statement released on Friday. The move comes just ahead of next week’s United Nations General Assembly session in New York. During the session, several other countries are also expected to formally recognise Palestine. The decision follows Portugal’s earlier announcement in July, which cited growing concerns over the Gaza conflict and humanitarian crisis. Lisbon said the recognition reflects its commitment to peace and international law.

The Portuguese foreign ministry said the official declaration would be made on Sunday, September 21. The decision comes amid worsening conditions in Gaza, where Israel’s military campaign continues. The United Nations has warned of looming famine in Gaza City, further intensifying global pressure. Several long-time allies of Israel, including Portugal, now argue that recognising Palestine is a step toward peace. Lisbon emphasized that Israel’s repeated threats to annex Palestinian land also influenced its decision.

Other Western nations are reportedly preparing similar announcements at the UN assembly. These include Britain, France, and Canada, according to diplomatic sources. In addition, countries like Australia, Belgium, Andorra, Luxembourg, Malta, and San Marino are expected to follow suit. A French presidential adviser confirmed these names on Friday. The growing list of countries signals a shift in international sentiment toward the two-state solution.

Israel has strongly opposed the move, calling it a reward for Hamas’ actions during its October 7, 2023 attack. Israeli officials argue that recognition undermines peace efforts and encourages violence. However, many countries say the recognition supports the rights of ordinary Palestinians and puts pressure on all parties to negotiate. With the humanitarian crisis worsening, calls for a political solution are gaining strength.

Currently, nearly three-quarters of the 193 United Nations member states already recognise Palestine as a sovereign state. The upcoming UN General Assembly will focus heavily on the two-state solution. Supporters believe global recognition could revive stalled peace talks. Critics warn it may deepen divisions. Still, momentum is building for wider diplomatic recognition of Palestine amid the Gaza conflict.
