Protest continues in lower Kurram amid tensions following peace deal

KURRAM: A protest sit-in continues in the Mandori area of Lower Kurram as demonstrators demand action following unrest in the region. Police engaged with the protesters on Tuesday, attempting to bring an end to the ongoing demonstration. The protesters are calling for a visit from the grand jirga, a council of tribal elders, to hold talks in Mandori and address their grievances. Additionally, they have demanded compensation for homes and shops affected during the recent lawlessness in the region.

 

The protest comes in the wake of a peace agreement between warring tribes in the Kurram region, which aimed to open roads and restore peace. As part of the agreement, the grand jirga, led by the Commissioner of Kohat, is expected to visit Mandori today for discussions.

In response to the ongoing tensions, Section 144 has been imposed in the Protest continues in lower Kurram amid tensions following peace deal Valley, prohibiting the display of arms and gatherings of more than four people. The decision follows concerns that attempts by militants could derail the fragile peace deal in the area. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s additional chief secretary issued the notification, enforcing Section 144 for a period of two months.

Barrister Saif, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa information advisor, stated that roads would be reopened once security clearance had been provided. This follows a peace deal between the rival tribes, which included provisions to open the roads in the area.

However, the peace process was marred when militants attacked the Deputy Commissioner of Protest continues in lower Kurram amid tensions following peace deal, Javedullah Mehsud, and several security personnel. The attack occurred after the peace agreement was signed and the decision to open the roads was made. The attack injured the deputy commissioner and security personnel, leading to a security crackdown in the region.

In a related development, the Kurram district administration has taken action against three tribal elders who refused to sign the peace agreement. These elders, identified as Syed Rahman, Saifullah, and Karim Khan, have been arrested by the authorities. The district administration has vowed to take all necessary measures to restore order and ensure the successful implementation of the peace agreement.
