PTA Warns Against Illegal Content and Online Scams on Social Media

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a strong warning to social media users involved in sharing illegal content. It reminded users to respect digital laws and avoid promoting harmful or unlawful posts. PTA stressed that freedom of expression does not allow spreading hate or misinformation online.
In its statement, PTA said sharing blasphemous content or insulting religions and sacred figures is illegal. It also mentioned that inciting violence or spreading false news against national institutions is a crime. Such actions are punishable under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016.
Moreover, the authority noted that posting obscene, immoral, or fake content online also falls under illegal activity. PTA urged users to act responsibly on digital platforms and follow national laws. The agency added that promoting harmful narratives threatens public order and national peace.
PTA advised citizens to report illegal content using the PTA CMS mobile app. It said public cooperation is vital for safety and stability. The authority also reminded people to stay cautious and not ignore their digital responsibilities. Its message to the public: “Be alert, stay safe.”
In a separate advisory, PTA warned against fake messages from people posing as courier company agents. These messages often ask for verification codes or personal details. PTA confirmed that such scams have no link with real courier services or official entities.
Finally, PTA urged users never to share sensitive information or click on unknown links. It warned that fraudsters use these tricks to steal data or hack accounts. Staying vigilant online is essential to avoid falling victim to such cyber threats.
