PTA warns of SIM blockage over expired CNICs

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has urged citizens to keep their Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) updated to avoid disruption in mobile phone services across Pakistan.
In a recent advisory shared on social media, the PTA emphasised that maintaining valid identification records is essential for uninterrupted connectivity. The authority warned that SIM cards registered on expired CNICs or under someone else’s name could be blocked without prior notice.
Officials advised users to renew their identity documents promptly to ensure continued access to mobile networks. The move is part of broader efforts to strengthen regulatory compliance and enhance the security of telecommunications services nationwide.
The PTA stated that the measure reflects its commitment to safeguarding consumer interests while ensuring a reliable and transparent telecom system. Authorities believe that accurate user data also helps prevent misuse of SIM cards and supports national security objectives.

In a separate advisory issued earlier, the PTA also encouraged mobile users to activate free “Balance Save” or Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) blocker services. These features automatically stop internet usage once a data package expires, helping users avoid unexpected deductions from their mobile balance.
The regulator highlighted that many users unknowingly incur high charges when their data bundles run out, as mobile internet continues on standard PAYG rates. By enabling the blocker service, consumers can better manage their usage and expenses.
The latest directives underline PTA’s ongoing efforts to improve user awareness and promote responsible use of telecom services. Citizens are encouraged to follow official guidelines to avoid inconvenience and ensure seamless communication in an increasingly digital environment.
