PTCL to Launch Africa-1 Submarine Cable Project in Karachi

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) is set to hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Africa-1 Submarine Cable at its Sea View landing site in Karachi on February 22, 2025. This event marks a significant step toward enhancing Pakistan’s digital connectivity.

PTCL shared the news in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange Limited (PSX) on Friday, stating that the groundbreaking for the high-capacity Africa-1 Submarine Cable project will take place at the Karachi landing site, signaling a transformative advancement in Pakistan’s digital infrastructure company revealed that its board had approved an investment of $59.5 million for the Africa-1 submarine cable project in November 2020. This project is designed to provide connectivity between the UAE, Europe, and Africa, with multiple landing stations along the way.

PTCL began its annual investment in the project as part of its capital expenditures (CAPEX) starting in 2021. By 2025, around 75% of the total investment will have been completed over four years, with expectations that the full project cost will be achieved within the year. The project is expected to be “Ready for Service” (RFS) in the first quarter of 2026. Once completed, the Africa-1 submarine cable will be fully operational, enabling PTCL to begin generating revenue from the project and contributing positively to its growth.
