Punjab Expands Free Wi-Fi to 23 More Districts

LAHORE: The Punjab government has expanded its CM Free Wi-Fi initiative to 23 districts, aiming to improve public internet access. This move follows the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who launched the initiative to support digital inclusion. In Lahore alone, free Wi-Fi is now active at 442 locations. So far, over 58 million users have consumed 1,191 terabytes of internet data. The service is available at public spaces such as markets, parks, hospitals, and transport hubs.
According to the Safe City Authority, the initiative now covers 952 key public points across 23 additional districts. These include major cities and smaller towns, expanding the reach of public connectivity. The aim is to ensure free, fast, and reliable internet access for students, workers, and everyday commuters. The service is being closely monitored for performance and security. Authorities plan further expansion based on usage data and public feedback.
Meanwhile, Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi announced that Punjab’s railway stations will also receive free Wi-Fi. The plan includes 40 stations, ensuring passengers can stay connected while traveling. This project aligns with the broader digitalization efforts across public services. It will enhance the travel experience and support e-governance goals. The integration of Wi-Fi at railway hubs marks a major step forward for smart transport infrastructure.
In a recent interview, Abbasi revealed the Punjab government’s Rs350 billion investment in eight branch railway routes. He confirmed that upgrading railways is a major priority. The ML-1 railway corridor is at the center of these efforts, promising improved speed, safety, and connectivity. Alongside infrastructure upgrades, new governance systems are being introduced to improve transparency and operations.
The government’s vision combines digital expansion with transport reform, aimed at boosting economic activity and public convenience. Free Wi-Fi is just one part of a larger push toward modernization. Officials say these steps will help bridge the digital divide. Citizens are encouraged to make full use of the services, as the province moves toward a more connected future.
