The Punjab government has enforced a strict ban on kite flying across the province, introducing severe penalties for those who violate the new regulations.

In a move aimed at curbing the dangers associated with kite flying, particularly the use of life-threatening twine, the Punjab Assembly has passed an amendment bill declaring kite flying a non-bailable offence. Under the new law, violators could face imprisonment ranging from three to seven years, depending on the severity of the offence.

The penalties extend beyond just kite flyers. Manufacturers, dealers, and individuals involved in any activities related to kite flying or the production of dangerous kite strings will be subjected to hefty fines. These fines range from Rs 500,000 to Rs 5 million.

Individuals caught flying kites anywhere in Punjab could face a jail sentence of three to five years, a fine of Rs 2 million, or both. Those found guilty of producing or supplying kites and related materials may face imprisonment of five to seven years, a fine of up to Rs 5 million, or both.

The law also takes into account younger offenders. In the case of children, the first offence will incur a fine of Rs 50,000, which increases to Rs 100,000 for repeated violations.

The government has introduced these stringent measures following a growing number of casualties caused by the use of hazardous kite-flying twine, which has been linked to numerous accidents in various parts of Punjab.
