Punjab Government strengthens border security with increased recruitment and resources

In a move aimed at bolstering security along its borders with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, the Punjab government announced on Monday plans to enhance the capabilities of its border security forces.
Official documents reveal that significant amendments are being made to the service rules of the Punjab Border Military Police and Baloch Levies. As part of the initial phase, 50% of vacant positions in these forces will be filled, addressing staffing shortages and improving security operations. Additionally, the upper age limit for recruitment has been increased by five years, allowing more candidates to apply and strengthening the personnel available for deployment.
The government has allocated Rs500 million for logistical support, including purchasing vehicles and weaponry, to support operations in the tri-border area. Furthermore, Rs527.1 million will be spent on upgrading existing checkpoints to enhance their operational effectiveness.
To combat rising challenges such as smuggling and terrorism, joint checkpoints will be established. These will be manned by personnel from the Border Military Police, Baloch Levies, and Customs Department, working collaboratively to address security threats.
The last recruitment for the Border Military Police and Baloch Levies in the districts of Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur occurred in 1998, highlighting the long-standing need for strengthening these forces in light of evolving security concerns. The new initiatives reflect the provincial government’s commitment to improving border security and addressing the region’s growing challenges.
