In a bid to combat rising smog levels, the Punjab government has announced new regulations requiring vehicles to have a fitness certificate in order to obtain M-tags, effective immediately. The decision is part of a broader effort to tackle pollution and improve air quality, particularly during the smog-prone months of October through January.

As part of the new measures, vehicles older than 30 years will be banned from entering Lahore during the smog season and will not be allowed on motorways. To obtain an M-tag, vehicle owners will now need to present a valid fitness certificate, along with the vehicle’s registration book and driving license.

Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan stated that this requirement aims to reduce pollution from poorly maintained vehicles, which are a significant contributor to smog. He added that the Services and General Administration Department has been instructed to compile data on government vehicles as part of the new initiative.

Khan emphasised that the regulations would apply to all vehicles, including private and commercial ones. The fitness certificate requirement will initially be enforced for government vehicles, ensuring that the policy is applied uniformly across the board.
