Author Avatar Web Desk | 4 months ago
Punjab University and China’s Wuhan University have jointly developed a new hybrid rice seed that can triple the yield to 140 mounds per acre. This is the first Honglian-type hybrid rice developed in Pakistan.

The research team includes Punjab University’s Dr. Muhammad Ashfaq, Dr. Muhammad Ali Klasra, and Wuhan University’s Professor Runshan Zhou, amongst others. The Pakistan Agricultural Research Council has approved the seed after completing all technical evaluations.

The new hybrid, named PU786, has been successfully tested across four provinces in Pakistan. It is resistant to bacterial diseases, extreme heat, and pests.

Punjab University Vice Chancellor Dr. Muhammad Ali stated that this development will boost academic cooperation between Pakistan and China, increase national rice production, and help expand Pakistan’s rice exports.
