Sahafi Summit Launches New AI Guidelines for Newsrooms

Pakistan has taken an important step for responsible journalism by introducing new rules for using artificial intelligence. These rules were presented at the Sahafi Summit, and they aim to guide media professionals on safe and ethical use of AI. These AI guidelines for Pakistani newsrooms mark the first joint effort to help newsrooms use technology responsibly.

The Sahafi Summit was organized by Media Matters for Democracy, where experts discussed how AI should be used in the field of journalism. They prepared ethical principles to make sure newsrooms maintain transparency and protect journalistic values while adopting new technologies.

The three-day summit was held in collaboration with the University of the Punjab’s Department of Media and Development Communication, with support from the European Union in Pakistan and UNESCO. Senior professionals worked together to shape these guidelines to strengthen responsibility and accuracy in media work.

According to MMfD founder Asad Baig, these guidelines will help newsrooms understand how AI can be included in their workflow without harming the credibility of journalism. Students and faculty members from the media department participated in workshops, debates and discussions related to the future of AI in journalism.

Dr. Ayesha Ashfaq, Chairperson of the department, said that media students will shape the future of journalism in Pakistan, so they must be part of these important discussions. Media Matters for Democracy will begin industry consultations in 2026 to ensure these AI guidelines for Pakistani newsrooms are properly implemented.
