Scientists Identify Brain Protein That Could Reverse Ageing Effects

Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, have identified a protein named FTL1 linked to brain ageing.
They discovered that higher levels of this protein play a damaging role in memory and learning functions. The finding has opened new discussions on ageing and possible treatments for age-related decline.
During experiments on mice, researchers observed high levels of FTL1 in the hippocampus. This brain region manages memory and learning. The increase caused weaker connections between brain cells, reduced growth, and noticeable memory loss. This highlighted how the protein could limit brain performance.
When scientists reduced FTL1 levels, older mice showed dramatic improvements. Their neurons formed stronger connections and their memory test performance improved. The researchers stressed that this was not just slowing ageing. Instead, they described it as reversing the impact of age on the brain.
Lead researcher Sol Velada explained that the discovery raised strong hope. He said the results offered the possibility of restoring youthful brain power. This was seen as a new direction compared to earlier approaches, which focused only on delaying decline. The breakthrough has therefore attracted wide scientific interest.
In addition, researchers noted that high levels of FTL1 slowed cell metabolism. This suggested the protein’s influence extended beyond memory and brain function. The broader impact made the discovery even more important for understanding ageing processes. It also gave scientists a new target for future therapies.
Following this finding, the team is now exploring medical treatments. They aim to target FTL1 in ways that may improve human brain function.
