ISLAMABAD: PPP senior leader Senator Sherry Rehman called for an open debate on the 27th Constitutional Amendment. She spoke during a Senate session on Saturday. Rehman urged the government not to make decisions behind closed doors. “This parliament is not a rubber-stamp,” she emphasized. She also encouraged the opposition to actively participate in the democratic process.

Rehman stated that the amendment does not reserve any powers or privileges for specific individuals. She stressed that transparency is essential for public trust. Meanwhile, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar asked the opposition to attend the standing committee meetings. He encouraged discussions on their reservations regarding the amendment.

Tarar added that the Suo motu facility is no longer available. Therefore, no chief justice can dismiss a prime minister unilaterally. This change, he noted, strengthens parliamentary authority. The minister urged members to work constructively to improve the amendment.

On another issue, PML-N leader Tariq Fazal Chaudhry spoke about Afghanistan. He said the government aims to resolve the stalemate through negotiations. He noted that Afghan representatives often ignore written evidence, though the Taliban accept it during talks.

Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani confirmed that members will have opportunities to discuss the amendment. The session has been postponed to 3:00 pm on Sunday. Members will continue debates on both Sunday and Monday to ensure full participation.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) expressed strong dissatisfaction over the exclusion of their proposals from the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill. During the recent federal cabinet session, both parties voiced concern that their suggestions were ignored despite earlier assurances from the government. Sources said MQM and BAP leaders felt their recommendations were essential for fair representation and better governance.

Federal Minister Mustafa Kamal led the protest, criticizing the government for excluding the local councils’ clause from the bill. He accused the government of breaking its promise and failing to honor earlier commitments. Kamal stressed that the proposed amendment was crucial to strengthen local governments and ensure better distribution of power. His remarks reflected MQM’s ongoing demand for practical empowerment of local bodies.
