Sindh Announces Free Electricity?

SUKKUR (July 14, 2025): Sindh’s Energy Minister Nasir Hussain Shah has announced a major relief initiative for low-income households—free electricity up to 100 units, made possible through a new power authority and solar energy projects.

Speaking to a private news channel, Shah revealed that the formation of SIPRA (Sindh Independent Power Regulatory Authority) marks the first step towards this goal. Under SIPRA, Sindh will generate its own electricity and will also set its own tariff.

To ensure affordable energy, the government plans to establish solar parks in Sukkur and Larkana, which will supply power to SEPCO and HESCO. Some electricity from these parks is already being supplied to K-Electric and other grids.

The minister, however, criticised the lack of provincial representation in key federal energy bodies. “While Sindh has a presence on the SEPCO and HESCO boards, K-Electric and OGDCL still exclude Sindh’s voice,” Shah stated, demanding inclusion in these decision-making platforms.
