Sindh cabinet approves plan for 8,000 electric buses in Karachi

KARACHI: The Sindh government has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to transform the public transportation system in Karachi by introducing 8,000 electric buses. This large-scale project aims to modernise the city’s mass transit, reduce pollution, and provide sustainable transport options to the residents of Karachi.
The plan will be rolled out in three phases, with the first phase seeing the deployment of 500 electric buses within the first year. Currently, 50 electric buses are already operational and servicing key routes across the city.
In the second phase, an additional 1,500 electric buses will be added to the fleet, further expanding the network and improving accessibility for Karachi’s growing population.
The final phase, set to be completed over the next four years, will bring the total number of electric buses to between 4,000 and 6,000. This phase will also include the establishment of critical infrastructure such as charging stations, depots, and bus stations to support the expanded fleet.
One of the key components of this ambitious project is the development of a solar power plant with a capacity of up to 1GW. This renewable energy plant, which is expected to be completed by the end of Phase 3, will provide sustainable power to the electric buses, further enhancing the environmental benefits of the initiative.
