The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration on Sunday opened the spillways of Rawal Dam after persistent rainfall pushed the reservoir’s water level dangerously close to its maximum capacity.

According to the ICT administration spokesperson, the water level rose to 1,748 feet, just four feet below the dam’s maximum storage limit of 1,752 feet, triggering a precautionary release of water to mitigate any risk of overflow or structural stress on the dam.

Officials confirmed that after six and a half hours of controlled water release, the dam’s level decreased to 1,746 feet, and then the spillways were closed as the situation stabilised within safe limits.

The decision to release water was taken in close coordination with key departments, including the district administration, Rescue 1122, and the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), ensuring a well-managed operation.

To manage the release and safeguard nearby communities, field teams were deployed at all critical points—including low-lying bridges, streams, and flood-prone areas. Assistant Commissioner Nilore oversaw the operation, while magistrates, Rescue 1122 personnel, ambulances, and union council staff were stationed at multiple locations downstream throughout the process.

“Ensuring public safety during such operations is our top priority,” an ICT official stated. “The situation remained under control, and no damage or incident was reported.”

The administration maintained constant communication with the Pakistan Meteorological Department to monitor rainfall forecasts and assess any additional water inflow that could impact the reservoir.
