Sri Lanka’s former navy chief arrested in 15-year-old abduction case

Sri Lankan authorities have arrested former Navy Chief Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne in connection with a 15-year-old abduction and disappearance case.
According to police, Ulugetenne is accused of being involved in the 2010 disappearance of a 48-year-old man, during his tenure as head of the Navy’s Intelligence Directorate.
An investigation officer told AFP that Ulugetenne was formally arrested after recording his statement, and a court has placed him on remand until Wednesday.
Admiral Ulugetenne served as Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy from 2020 to 2022. Following his retirement, he was appointed as Sri Lanka’s ambassador to Cuba.
