Sugar Prices Surge in Karachi: Commissioner Takes Notice

Karachi: A sharp increase in sugar prices across Karachi has prompted the city administration to take swift action. The Commissioner of Karachi has officially taken notice of the rising prices and issued a notification to fix new wholesale and retail rates.
According to the latest update, the government has increased the official sugar price by Rs. 10 per kilogram. For the past several days, sugar has been sold at prices ranging from Rs. 180 to Rs. 190 per kg in various markets and supermarkets, causing concern among consumers.
In response, the Karachi Commissioner has now set the wholesale price of sugar at Rs. 170 per kg, while the retail price has been fixed at Rs. 173 per kg. These prices have been officially notified and are to be implemented immediately.
Previously, under the notification issued on April 15, 2025, the wholesale rate of sugar was Rs. 160 per kg, and the retail price was Rs. 163 per kg. This means there has been an increase of Rs. 10 per kg in the official sugar price within just three months.
The Commissioner has directed all relevant authorities to enforce the new pricing strictly and to take legal action against violators. Citizens have also been encouraged to report any complaints of overcharging to the local administration or control rooms.
Meanwhile, the public has expressed frustration over the continuous rise in sugar prices, which they say is contributing to the growing inflation and increasing the burden on households.
